Nylander Nets Two in World Juniors Opener

The annual World Junior Championship kicked off today in Montreal and Toronto. The Sabres have three prospects taking part in the likes of Casey Fitzgerald (USA), Rasmus Asplund (SWE), and Alexander Nylander (SWE).

In last years tournament, Nylander led Sweden in scoring with nine points (4g, 5a) in seven games.

Continuing where he left off, Nylander spent no time getting on the score sheet in this year’s tournament. Just a little over ten minutes into the game, hovering around the offensive zone, Nylander let the play develop allowing a loose puck to find him and Alex made no mistake. Showing great patience the young swede cut around the defenseman to the middle of the ice and shooting it five hole for the first goal of the tournament.

Following this goal, Sweden took a demanding lead and eventually found themselves up 5-0. Nylander worked hard when he hit the ice once again and was hit hard behind the net, got up, and parked himself in front just in time to tap in a pass from the point.

Nylander and the rest of Sweden looked dynamic in their opener and the Swedes look for revenge after not earning a medal last year. The Sabres’ other Swedish prospect, Rasmus Asplund, finished +3 and had an assist.
